man and woman faces vector profilesDo women and men think differently on a range of subjects? That’s what we’ll be exploring in our “He Said, She Said” column.

The column is designed to delve into the thinking of the LVC male and female. From freshman to faculty, weekly questions will be asked to determine if sexes are also different in other ways.

It is up to you to decide at the end of each weekly installment if men and women are two different creatures. Your thoughts and questions are welcomed. Just email us at hesaidshesaidlvc@gmail.com.

This week’s question:  “What songs make you think about sex?”

This week’s original column question — What kind of songs do you play when you have sex? — proved a little too risqué for our interviewees, which is interesting considering that students told us about sex on the first date, so we had to quickly regroup and change our question.

Even with our new question, students still felt like we were probing a little too far into their personal lives (even though we all know everyone has a version of a sexy playlist on their iPod). There was a lot of uncomfortable laughter and awkward silence during the interview process.

However, we were able to get our answers from each of our standard 20 interviewees. And, the results are in.

There does not appear to be any correlation between gender and the genre of music that makes a person think about sex. From Miley Cyrus to Jeff Buckley, the answers ran the musical gamut.

Men:

The men of LVC are a diverse group, and their sexy song suggestions prove this point even further. There was no definite answer given from our interviewees, but here are a few options provided by them to help get you in the mood.

One song that came up twice was “I Just Had Sex” by The Lonely Island. Matt Parahaus ’14 and Devan Glenny ’14 agreed that the funny and erotic song made them think of sex.

Other than that, LVC men had a variety of playlist choices.

“I’d say, ‘Can’t Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe’ by Barry White,” says Tyler MacAulay ’15.

“‘Everybody Here Wants You’ by Jeff Buckley,” says Drew Piros ’14.

“There’s actually quite a few,” says Isaiah Luck ’14. “‘Loft Music’ by The Weeknd, ‘Let’s Get It On’ by Marvin Gaye, ‘High For This’ by Ellie Goulding, R-Kelly’s ‘Bump N’ Grind’ and ‘Spaceship Coupe’ by Justin Timberlake are all good ones.”

“‘We Can’t Stop’ by Miley Cyrus,” says Dom Alston ’17. “She’s basically saying you can’t stop us from partying and you can’t stop us from having sex,” he explains with a laugh.

Women:

There are two interesting recurring responses to note about the results from the ladies of LVC.

The first is that three of 10 women interviewed answered with the same song: “Let’s Talk About Sex” by Salt-N-Pepa.

“I just watched Pitch Perfect, so I’m thinking of that song from the riff-off, ‘Let’s Talk About Sex,’” says Lindsay Groft ’14.

Lindsay wasn’t alone. The other two ladies who answered with the same song also admitted to having recently watched Pitch Perfect.

“‘Let’s Talk About Sex,’” says Megan Hummel ’16. “It’s from Pitch Perfect.

The second is that a majority of the ladies we interviewed told us they associated songs about sex with the ultimate stripper anthems.

“Beyoncé’s ‘Dance For You,’” says Lindsey Landis ’16. “It’s, like, the ultimate stripper song.”

“‘Feeling Good’ by Michael Bublé,” says Karly Siffin ’14. “It makes me think about stripping.”

By far, the best answer to our question came from Cheyenne Hostetter ’15.

“In all honesty,” Hostetter says, “what songs are we listening to that don’t talk about sex? Except for, like, county music. But even then…”

Regardless of what musical genre you turn on when the lights turn off, Cheyenne’s right. You could pick just about any song and it would fit the mood.
